Details: The Silent Power of Design

By Shalotte Sugathan

By its very nature, a detail is subtle. Details don’t scream; they reward attention.

For a detail to be noticed, there must be a pause – a moment of reflection, a deliberate looking closer. It is in these moments that the true value of a design reveals itself, connecting with the audience in ways that are often subconscious yet meaningful.

In design, details are deep and inconspicuous, yet profoundly powerful elements capable of elevating the ordinary into the extraordinary, sometimes transforming the functional into a truly memorable experience.

Impactful designs embrace the power of details. From the perfect curve of a product that rests effortlessly in the hand, to optically nudging a logo or headline a few pixels so it “looks” centered to the eye even if it’s not mathematically centered, to foiling a brand promise in print to create emphasis, not bling – details carry the soul of design.

They live in the softness of a button press, the calm order of an aligned grid, the quiet arrow in the margin that tells you where to look, and the small moment of wit you only notice on your third visit. Details invite us to slow down and find joy in the small but significant nuances that truly matter.

The Three ‘C’s of Design

By Shalotte Sugathan

For me, the three choicest ingredients of design (action) are – conscience, courage and craft.

Building a design  conscience  in a broad and moral sense is one of the divine laws. A conscience that helps designers awake to a service responsibility towards society, our communities, the world, our planet, a higher interest that surpasses our business interests and goals.

Equally important is to design with  courage  – to always rise to a challenge, re-make ourselves and re-do in ways that can create change and/or bring  transformation.

Finally, to be able to realistically translate and make this happen using the highest amount of care and  craft  brings greatest fulfilment.

India in Design

indiaindesign

By Shalotte Sugathan

India can exist in anything – even in design. It doesn’t always need to appear in formal or visual terms, limited to what is seen or styled. Sometimes, it’s simply an idea, a feeling, an experience – or the spirit behind the design.

I’ve long been enthralled by the deep intellectual and artistic richness of my Indian heritage – its vast reach across Poetry, Literature, Art, Dance, Architecture, Mathematics, Philosophy, Astrology, and Mythology. So when a design solution for the 21st century is, even quietly, guided by an element of India, it’s deeply uplifting – the thought returns to me with quiet wonder.

A few that come to mind –

An identity designed for a philanthropic effort was inspired by the mythological symbolism of the ocean from an episode of the Puranas, in an unpredictable and unexpected way.

An exhibit and invite designed for the launch of a mobile exhibition that highlighted the natural, medicinal wonders of ancient Indian plants and herbs. The invite was based on the Namaskar (Mudra).

A book and poster series that was inspired by a desire to breathe life into numbers – 1 to 10 – and communicate their symbolic, inner meanings.
