Details: The Silent Power of Design

By Shalotte Sugathan

By its very nature, a detail is subtle. Details don’t scream; they reward attention.

For a detail to be noticed, there must be a pause – a moment of reflection, a deliberate looking closer. It is in these moments that the true value of a design reveals itself, connecting with the audience in ways that are often subconscious yet meaningful.

In design, details are deep and inconspicuous, yet profoundly powerful elements capable of elevating the ordinary into the extraordinary, sometimes transforming the functional into a truly memorable experience.

Impactful designs embrace the power of details. From the perfect curve of a product that rests effortlessly in the hand, to optically nudging a logo or headline a few pixels so it “looks” centered to the eye even if it’s not mathematically centered, to foiling a brand promise in print to create emphasis, not bling – details carry the soul of design.

They live in the softness of a button press, the calm order of an aligned grid, the quiet arrow in the margin that tells you where to look, and the small moment of wit you only notice on your third visit. Details invite us to slow down and find joy in the small but significant nuances that truly matter.

India in Design

indiaindesign

By Shalotte Sugathan

India can exist in anything – even in design. It doesn’t always need to appear in formal or visual terms, limited to what is seen or styled. Sometimes, it’s simply an idea, a feeling, an experience – or the spirit behind the design.

I’ve long been enthralled by the deep intellectual and artistic richness of my Indian heritage – its vast reach across Poetry, Literature, Art, Dance, Architecture, Mathematics, Philosophy, Astrology, and Mythology. So when a design solution for the 21st century is, even quietly, guided by an element of India, it’s deeply uplifting – the thought returns to me with quiet wonder.

A few that come to mind –

An identity designed for a philanthropic effort was inspired by the mythological symbolism of the ocean from an episode of the Puranas, in an unpredictable and unexpected way.

An exhibit and invite designed for the launch of a mobile exhibition that highlighted the natural, medicinal wonders of ancient Indian plants and herbs. The invite was based on the Namaskar (Mudra).

A book and poster series that was inspired by a desire to breathe life into numbers – 1 to 10 – and communicate their symbolic, inner meanings.

Compassion in Principle, and in Design

Successful Design Communication almost always enables people to feel and think about the subject matter. Such a kind of communication is only possible to create when designers and design-enablers get compassionate in their making and thinking through an invoking of –  compassion for the user/ customer/ product /service – a higher vision.

Compassion is such a crucial ingredient in design, just as it is in life, and one that’s often too ignored due to limitations of the mind, resources, and influence.

The Exercise Shop

By Shalotte Sugathan

My 4-year-old has quite the practical sense of humor. To her, the gym is the ‘exercise shop’. It makes sense in her world – after all, she’s grasped the human need to shop for everyday things like groceries, books, toys, clothes, and shoes. So, why not for exercise?

This simple, intuitive understanding is her way of seeking clarity; a reflection of how her young mind processes the world, breaking things down to their simplest, most digestible form.

This ability to simplify complex ideas is something we tirelessly strive for in our own work. At our practice, we believe that simplicity is a continuous process of refinement – in order to get to the core of what truly matters. It doesn’t mean stripping things of their meaning. It’s about balancing clarity with nuance, making sure the essential message shines through while still offering layers of meaning for those willing to look closer. Just as my daughter’s description of the gym holds a certain logic and wit, we believe communication can be both simple and nuanced – beautiful in its clarity.

In our fast-paced world, where we’re constantly seeking to say more, do more, and show more, perhaps we can all learn something from the way a child sees things.
